Call for Papers: Sergii Bulgakov – 150 Years After His Birth
Building the House of Wisdom
2. - 4. September 2021
hosted by the University of Fribourg, Switzerland
The conference is organised by the Sergii Bulgakov Research Centre at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in cooperation with the Orthodox Christian Studies Center of Fordham University (New York, USA), and the Volos Academy for Theological Studies (Greece).
Sergii Bulgakov is one of the preeminent theologians of the 20th century. The international conference on the occasion of his 150th birthday (16th/28th July 1871 – 13th July 1944) aims to promote the reception of his work in Eastern and Western academic life. The conference wants to explore Bulgakov’s contribution to meeting the challenges of the modern world and to build bridges between East and West. For this reason, we ask the speakers to correlate Bulgakov’s thought with current theological and philosophical, political, social and economical issues.
Dr Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, has kindly assumed the patronage of the Conference. The event will bring young researchers from different theological disciplines and different ecclesiastical traditions into conversation with established Bulgakov specialists. For more information on the confirmed main speakers see https://www.unifr.ch/sergij-bulgakov/de/forschung/konferenzen/bulgakov-conference-2021.html
Papers are to be offered in English. We welcome proposals of no more than 400 words. Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to apply. Deadline for proposals is 1st May 2021. By the End of May we will announce the final list of accepted applications. If your paper is accepted, the conference organizers will cover your travel and accommodation expenses.
The paper will be commented and discussed during a plenary panel. The panel contributions will rely on pre-circulated papers, which will be due by July 31, 2021. Papers should not exceed 5000 words. They will be made available for download from a password-protected section of the project website to all conference participants. The time scheduled for the presentation of a summary of your paper is 15 minutes.
After the conference, selected participants may be asked to prepare their papers for an edited volume. The requested papers will be reviewed and may not be accepted for publication.
