Romania’s Chamber of Deputies passed legislation on Tuesday declaring Archpriest Aurel Munteanu a martyr and hero of the Romanian nation. The law also establishes the Day of the Romanian Martyrs of Huedin, to be commemorated annually on 10 September. The bill was approved by an overwhelming majority, receiving 276 votes in favour, one against and no abstentions. It will now be sent to Romania’s President for promulgation. Two candidates for the office of Metropolitan of Bessarabia were nominated on Saturday, following the proceedings of the Metropolitan Synod convened in Chișinău. The Church ranks first in the public trust league in Romania, according to the latest barometer published by Informat.ro and INSCOP Research. According to the survey data, 63.9% of respondents report having “quite a lot” or “very much” trust in the Church, up from 57.7% in July last year.
