The leadership of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA (Patriarchate of Constantinople) Metropolitan Anthony (Scherba) and Archbishop Daniel proclaimed the year of 2018 to be the 100th anniversary of the UOC-USA, Religion in Ukraine reports. During the celebration of the anniversary, all the hierarchs, clergy, monastics and faithful will be honored “who lived before us and sacrificed themselves to build the Kingdom of God on this land much more than most of us do 100 years later,” according the message by the leadership of the UOC.
The solemn celebration will take place on July 28, 2018, in the Metropolia center of the UOC-USA on the day of remembrance of the Holy and Equal to the Apostles Prince Volodymyr. “As we prepare for this great celebration and recall our ancestors from Ukraine and the United States, we call upon every Ukrainian Orthodox Christian to join all celebrations, share our great joy with our friends and relatives,” the message reads. "As we prepare for these celebrations, we must always remember our mission, the salvation of souls and bring healing, welfare, integrity, spiritual perfection and joy, working together to reveal the beauty of God's creation, preaching and living the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
As reported, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA was formed from Ukrainians who arrived in the United States, fleeing from the calamities that befell their homeland in the Russian Empire, and then the USSR. For a long time, the canonical status of the UOC in the United States was uncertain. Finally, in 1995, the Church entered the jurisdiction of the Constantinople Patriarchate.
