Ukraine: Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes PACE’s resolution on protecting freedom of religion and belief in Europe
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine appreciates the passing of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly resolution on "Countering Discrimination Based on Religion and Protecting Freedom of Religion or Belief in Europe." This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
The MFA emphasized that Ukraine is committed to promoting freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, which are fundamental human rights protected by the European Convention on Human Rights. Achieving equality and non-discrimination is essential for fully realizing these rights in a democratic society.
A key point of the resolution is its recognition that violations of freedom of religion or belief may occur in situations of armed conflict and foreign occupation. Russia's aggression against Ukraine is accompanied by consistent violations of religious freedom in the temporarily occupied territories, the persecution of religious communities that are not under the control of the aggressor state, and the manipulation of religion for political purposes.
In this context, Ukraine welcomes the call for effective monitoring, documentation, and response to these violations at both national and international levels, as this is crucial for ensuring accountability," stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (Quelle: www.risu.ua, 22. April 2026)
